Hoop Dance - Bowl

Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump, Alberta, Canada.

This was to celebrate the museum/interpretive centre of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump's 19th birthday.

I had gone to visit my grandmother and, of course, visiting with my grandmother means going to every available museum in driving distance. So we went to Head-Smashed-In and lo-and-behold it was their 19th birthday with 4 different styles of dancing performances and a dozen dance categories as well. It was great, I took picture after picture and hopefully some turned out!!


University of Leithbridge student Sandy La Mouche from Lac la Biche performed a truly beautiful Hoop Dance. The Hoop Dance began as a physical expression of prayer and it is the manipulation of as many hoops as the dancer can handle. They are looped together to form shapes and the dancer does this all while they are moving. It’s an amazing experience to watch!
